And let the Harry Potter week begin

I don’t know how most of you feel about Harry Potter, but I’ve been a Potter fanatic for about half of my life. For many of us Harry Potter’s been a part of our childhood, and if you’re like me, you slammed the book to the ground when Dumbledore died (old spoiler), waited in long lines for when each new book was released, and have already purchased your ticket for the midnight showing this Thursday/Friday.

So how has J.K. Rowling’s fictional characters taken over the world recently? Not even taking into consideration that the Quidditch World Cup took place this weekend in New York (I heard NYU faired pretty well), but Harry Potter has pretty much taken over news stands, twitter feeds, and Facebook status’ galore.

So how are you paying attention to the Harry Potter week? Today, November 15, is the US Premiere of the movie here in New York, and if I wasn’t fulfilling my duties as an intern, I would so be there. But where else can you find your favorite Potter stars?

Monday- Catch Rupert Grint on “Live with Regis and Kelly,” start watching the live stream online of the movie premiere at 6pm (CNN.com and HollywoodNews.com are just a few of the websites that are streaming the event for free), Tom Felton will be on Jay Leno, and Emma Watson on Letterman
Tuesday- Emma Watson will be on “Live with Regis and Kelly” and catch Daniel Radcliffe on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Wednesday- “Live with Regis and Kelly”wraps things up with the Harry Potter stars with Daniel Radcliffe
Thursday- go to the midnight showing, obviously.

Also, if you live in Residential College in Goddard or Broome, I believe they’re screening the first six movies this entire week in the Goddard Charlie Chaplin Lounge at 8pm.

So just wait a little bit longer my fellow Harry Potter fans! The first part of the final movie is just a few days away. Yes, it’ll be a bittersweet ending to such a big chunk of many of our childhoods, but it’s an ending none of us will want to miss out on.

Event Recap: NBCU Info Session

Last Friday, WIC was invited to attend an NBC Universal internship information session at 30 Rock, organized by NBCU’s Campus Relations Manager, Delia Camarsa. The session gave us a very detailed description of the various internship programs that NBCU offers and left us all wanting to be part of NBCU. Thank you to those who were able to attend!

NBCU offers internships in New York, California, New Jersey and Connecticut for fall, winter and summer semesters. Delia gave us a tip that applying for the fall semester is the least competitive as most students are still in the summer mode. On this note, the summer internships are extremely competitive as students from other states will also be applying.

The internship presents students the opportunity to be exposed to real world experiences at the field of their choice. Here the are the departments that offer internships in the east coast:

• Advertising & Promotions
• Graphic Arts/Digital Media /iVillage

Inside Fashion Recap

Last Tuesday, we held the incredibly successful event, Inside Fashion, a panel featuring fashion professionals from all sides of this illustrious industry. Panelists included:

Zandile Blay, founder of the Blay Report, market editor of Paper Magazine, and recently appointed fashion editor for Essence.com.
Elana Fishman, fashion assistant at Marie Claire
Paula Lee, accessories assistant at Marie Claire (and older sister of our very own WIC president Martina!)
Chris Vaught, an account executive in International Sales for Oscar de la Renta
Hillary Prim, a senior account manager for fashion PR firm HL Group

A packed room of about 70 attendees listened eagerly as our panelists broke down the industry and demystified whatever preconceived notions we might have had of the fashion world. Their words were encouraging, motivating, and most of all real.

After describing their positions and what a typical workday for them entails, they offered practical advice for internships and the job search, such as bringing a copy of your resume to the interview and being knowledgeable of current events in the industry. They mentioned being discreet and tactful on the job (some bosses don’t really care to hear about how wasted you got last Friday). They also discussed the type of interns they want – interns who are resourceful and able to figure out the assignments handed to them no matter how obscure; they want interns who are go getters. Ms. Blay expressed that interns should be willing to not only put in the extra mile, but to actually run the entire marathon.

One important tip given by Ms. Fishman was that “Fashion is culture.” She expressed that the more you know about culture, whether it be through art, literature, or even food, the better prepared you’ll be to contribute to the fashion industry.

Ms. Pekerman described the importance of developing your own personal brand, a way to distinguish and define yourself so that you stand out from the rest of the crowd. She also expressed the importance of networking and cultivating the relationships with the people around you – in fact, Chris Vaught and Hillary Prim were friends since their Freshman year at NYU.

The fashion world is a very close-knit industry. All the panelists had worked together at one point or another, which is why supporting each other and helping each other in their endeavors pays off. Some of our panelists had friends who were also professionals in the industry come to listen to them speak, just as a way to support them. It’s these kind of gestures that can help you get far in the industry.

One striking thing that all the panelists agreed on was how much work you have to put into being a part of this industry. They all expressed a deep desire to be in the fields that they are in today, and as glamorous as it seems, the fashion world isn’t worth it if you don’t have that incredible desire to be a part of it. “I remember when I was 13, and I used to want to be a journalist,” Ms. Blay stated. “You have to honor that fantasy, because it’s all that you’re going to have to keep you going. And that’s beautiful.”

Start your engines..

Even though most of us are just wrapping up our midterms, it’s already time to dust off that resume and cover letter and get them back in tip-top shape for the spring internship hunt. (It’s also time to think about classes for next semester, yikes.) There are many companies already putting out their call for spring semester internships – and some more formalized programs have summer deadlines approaching too. Even if you’re not quite ready to cement plans for next semester, it’s a good idea to update your cover letter and resume to reflect this semester’s activities (you can always go to the Wasserman Center for help!) and start browsing websites like CareerNet, the MCC internship listings, etc, to get an idea of what’s available. Check out our links page for some more suggestions.

Some things to keep in mind:

-Don’t be afraid to try something new. Just because you don’t have experience in a given area doesn’t mean you will get overlooked. Think about how you can apply your skills and past experiences to this new position and be sure to tailor your resume and cover letter to reflect that.

-Don’t be afraid to stick with something you’re enjoying, either. If you really like the company you’re interning for, approach your supervisor about staying on for another semester. You will be able to build upon relationships within the company, understand what it’s like working long-term, and maybe be able to take on a bigger project.

-Organization is key. With so many opportunities, websites, and emails, I find it helpful to keep an Excel sheet to keep track of the resumes I’ve sent, what replies I’ve received, and next steps.

Hanging out in the Green!

Hi, everyone! I am Sarah, Treasurer on the board of Women in Communications. I am in CAS, majoring in Environmental Studies. I know my major seems weird to people interested in communications. But who says I cannot do it? Right now I am interning in the Press Office of NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, where I help contact media, write media advisories and press releases. Yes! I love working with media, and have a hand in my major at the same time.

I have some information of a couple of great events going to happen in parks in the city for you! Don’t just stay in the dorm or Bobst at your weekends. Go outside and enjoy yourself in the last-minute green season! Autumn is almost at its end! And Winter is coming. Make sure to catch the air of the Green before they are all defoliated.
